History[]

Mirrorman[]

SGM is established by Dr. Mitarai to help defend Earth from the Invaders after the death of Kyotaro's father at their hands and the disappearance of his mother. Unlike the defense teams of the Ultraman Series, SGM is not primarily combat based. While members are occasionally involved in one-on-one fights with the Invaders, their goal is the scientific study of Invader plots. They investigate them and build weaponry, but actual combat using planes or artillery against kaiju is carried out by the military.

However, after the destruction of Mitarai residence by Snake King, SGM was force to secretly relocate to a new one in mountains. In there, it revealed that Dr. Mitarai has developed a originally research-proposed aircraft known as Jumbo Phoenix (ジャンボフェニックス Janbo Fenikkusu), which would be reproposed into a separatable fighter jet. From this point and on, SGM would be full reborn as a more traditional armed defense team against Invaders.

Jumborg Ace[]

Two years after Mirrorman's departure, Earth would be threatened by a new alien invasion force: Alien Gross. A new defense team know as PAT would be established while the still active SGM was assigned to Africa. In episode 32, during the battle against Mad Go-Ne, Chief Murakami and Yuki piloted Jumbo Phoenix to aid disadvantaged PAT and Jumborg 9, and the former would be appointed as the fourth captain of PAT afterward. After the death of Member Ooba in the hand of Satan Go-Ne and Babaras, Yasuda would also be transferred from SGM as a reinforcement in episode 43.

At the beginning of the series, SGM's headquarters was located in the underground basement, 30 meters below the outskirts of Tokyo, at the Mitarai residence. It was a research institute equipped with advanced scientific facilities and surrounded by comprehensive security measures to quickly detect invading aggressors.

After the destruction of the Mitarai residence by Snake King, a new headquarters emerged in the underground of a mountainous area, complete with a hangar for storing the giant battle jet, Jumbo Phoenix.

Kenichi Mitarai

Kenichi Mitarai (御手洗 健一, Mitarai Kenichi) is an internationally renowned authority in astrophysics and serves as Japan's representative at the International Earth Defense Conference.

Due to the perceived threat of alien invasions, he established the SGM (Space Guardian Mankind) to counter them.

Hiroshi Murakami

Hiroshi Murakami (村上 浩, Murakami Hiroshi) is the captain of SGM. He was a former detective in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Metropolitan Police Department. He was suspected of killing a colleague under the accusation of Invaders, leading to his disciplinary dismissal. Later, he was recruited by Mitarai and became the leader of SGM members for operations.

In Jumborg Ace, he serves as the acting captain and the fourth leader of PAT.

Takeshi Fujimoto

Takeshi Fujimoto (藤本 武, Fujimoto Takeshi) is the vice-captain of SGM. He had a self-taught background in natural sciences at a national university before graduating. Within the team, he excels in shooting and skills like scuba diving.

Hidehiko Yasuda

Hidehiko Yasuda (安田 秀彦, Yasuda Hidehiko) is the communications officer of SGM, specializing in information analysis and demonstrating exceptional proficiency in fields such as statistics and calculus.

In Jumborg Ace, he becomes a member of PAT.

Yuki Nomura

Yuki Nomura (野村 由起, Nomura Yuki) is Mitarai's secretary and the only female member of SGM, primarily responsible for reconnaissance and communication tasks.

In Jumborg Ace, she aided disadvantaged PAT and Jumborg 9 during the battle against Mad Go-Ne.

Kyotaro Kagami (鏡 京太郎, Kagami Kyōtarō) is a news photographer for the Daily News, and starting from episode 27, he becomes a special member of SGM.

Asako Mitarai

Asako Mitarai (御手洗 朝子, Mitarai Asako) is the daughter of Dr. Mitarai, and starting from episode 27, she volunteers to become a provisional member of SGM.

SGM Uniform (SGMユニフォーム, SGM Yunifōmu): Initially, it consisted of a blue suit jacket with gray pants for male members and a white mini-skirt for female members. During field operations, they wore white jackets with deep blue stripes. - Starting from episode 11, they began wearing black leather jackets during battles. With the upgrade in weaponry, from episode 27 onwards, their uniforms and helmets were changed to white combat suits, with blue uniforms for male members and red uniforms for female members.

Solgan (ソルガン, Sorugan): Laser gun powered by sunlight and starlight. Developed by Dr. Okura, an acquaintance of Dr. Mitarai, and his affiliated research institute. Jumbo Phoenix

Jumbo Phoenix (ジャンボフェニックス, Janbo Fenikkusu): SGM has secretly developed a versatile giant combat aircraft, also known as the "Flight Research Lab." This aircraft can launch from a concealed underwater outlet at SGM's new base and can function as three separate units depending on the situation. Its primary weapons include laser guns, high-performance missiles, and traction beams launched from the bottom of the fuselage.

Aircraft 1: Serves as the command unit for the Jumbo Phoenix, forming the bottom and main wings. It is primarily piloted by Captain Murakami.

The vehicle is based on the Opel Rekord C model.Atomic Submarine Pacific (原子力潜水艇パシフィック号, Genshiryoku Sensuitei Pashifikku-gō): A high-performance small submarine, piloted by Vice Captain Fujimoto and team member Yasuda. The miniature model is a modification of Mattsub from Return of Ultraman.
